Before you think of starting a blog, you want to know five things.
What do you want to blog about
Why are you going into blogging
What platform do you want to use
What Are Others In Your Niche Doing
What is your income model
WHAT DO YOU WANT TO BLOG ABOUT
This is basically called finding a niche. A niche is a small segment of a large market.
For instance, Men’s Fashion is a niche, Badminton Rackets is a niche, Keto diet for men is a niche, etc.
The less popular the niche, the less competition your blog would face, the easier it is for you to rank on google.
Rule of Thumb: If you are a newbie, don’t go into entertainment, politics, religion or those very popular niches. E get Why.
But knowing what to blog about is just one part of the game.
You also want to know if what you want to blog about is profitable,
Before you’ll go and start a blog now and be earning just 10cents after 2 years.
I talked more about how to pick a niche and know if a niche is profitable in my Blogging Case Study.

2. WHY ARE YOU GOING INTO BLOGGING
Why I dey ask you sef? I know it is to make money but that is not enough cos e no too easy like that.
Think of all the skills you can learn, think of having something for yourself online that you can build,
Think of starting a legitimate business with the skills you learnt,
Think of networking, the international bloggers that would reach out to you to help them with something, etc
Your why needs to be bigger than just making money with Adsense.
3. WHAT PLATFORM DO YOU WANT TO USE
There are currently three popular platforms to start a blog.
WordPress.com FREE/beginner friendly
Blogger.com FREE/beginner friendly
WordPress.org Paid/not so beginner friendly
My expert opinion.
Go for wordpress.org…., E get why.
If you have to choose between the two free options
Go for blogger.com (na google get am)
Next thing is to decide on hosting and domain
Domain is how you want people to locate your site online, e.g Lickplate.com ; sabichop.com , these are domains.
Blogger.com and wordpress.com would give you a free domain to use.
With WordPress.org, you buy your own custom domain.
Hosting is where you want your site files to be held online. Again blogger. com/wordpress. com give you free hosting.
For wordpress.org, you buy your hosting from any hosting company.
Whichever you go for, you still need to learn how to properly set it up
Or your blog would be looking like Loki’s face when Thanos Killed him in Avengers- Infinity war.
You don’t want to skip this part or rush over it either.
These is where issues like-
My blog is not ranking, adsense rejected my blog, etc comes from.
You want to properly set your blog for speed, SEO, necessary functionalities, etc.
A word is enough for who get sense.
(I show how to properly set up a blog in my case study by the way)
4. WHAT ARE OTHERS IN YOUR NICHE DOING
I swear to the gods that said Naija jollof is sweeter than Ghana jollof, you don’t want to skip this part.
Look at what your competitors are writing about, look at how they are writing, look at where they are linking to, etc
It would let you know for sure if you can thrive in this niche and ideas on what you can do better too.
There is something called the skyscraper technique in blog writing.
Knowing what others in your niche are writing about would help you come up with a proper content strategy.
5. DECIDE ON YOUR INCOME MODEL
Before I even talk about this.
Don’t get confused or be scared, blogging can bring you plenty money. I can bet my left bum bum on this.
Don’t even doubt it.
Don’t let laziness or fear stop you.
That being said, what is your income model..,
There are many ways to make money from your blog, just like there are many ways to make money from a land.
Blogging is your own digital land.
Some of these ways are..,
Ad networks, e.g adsense, mediavine, ezoic
Selling your own guide, course, coaching program, etc
SEO content creation, etc
But, all these methods need their own strategy, creativity, etc to work.
Also, forget about adsense, yes I said it. (at least for now)
Over-reliance on getting adsense approved is why you are not thinking of other creative ways to make money from your blog.
It is also why you are in a lot of hurry to create an ugly looking blog that would still get rejected sef.
Set up your blog properly and 4 weeks after, you could be making money from it.
If you like doubt, that one concern you.
