You are going to discover amazing truth here on whether it is right as new creation, God’s beloved children and the heirs of salvation to ask God to bless us or not; and as you begin reading, I want you to know that the purpose of this writing is to edify, and to build up God’s children so that all of us would come higher in the knowledge of the truth.
When Jesus wanted to give John the apostle the revelations in the book of revelation, Jesus told him, _”come up hither…”_ It was important for Jesus to tell John to come up because what He was about to show him were not things for those at a low level, so John was caught up to another higher realm from where he can understand the revelations Jesus wanted to show him.
The same way Jesus told John to come up is the same way He is speaking to us to come up, that’s why there’s the hunger in us to want to know Him more and more.
Paul shared the same experience in 2 Corinthians 12 of how he was caught up to the third heaven and heard unspeakable words, words that were proper and lawful for men to utter. This was how Paul had insight into the deep realities of God which was why he always shared, not just the knowledge of the truth, but ‘the precise knowledge’ _(epignosis)_ of the truth.
As a follower of Christ, it’s always my desire and hunger to walk in this same realm which Paul walked, which John walked, and which Pastor Chris Oyakhilome is walking today. So, what you are about to read here came from that realm and I know that as you open your heart to the Holy Spirit, He would help you come up in the epignosis _(precise knowledge)_ of the truth (1 Timothy 2:4).
We ask God to bless us, and everyday we want God to bless us; we do this without studying the word in the light of the new testament to know if we should be doing that or not; I used to do this also, I ask God to pour His blessings on me abundantly, and bless everything I do, not having the perfect understanding of what I was doing then until the Holy Spirit opened the eye of my understanding.
As I was studying Paul’s revelation I discovered that, that’s not a higher level in God but a lower level, and something babes in Christ should be doing. It’s not for the matured sons of God, but for children. The Holy Spirit has damaged my ignorance by opening my eyes to see something the ordinary mind can’t see, it’s in Ephesians 1:3 which says,
_*”Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ.”* Ephesians 1:3 NKJV_
Apostle Paul by the Spirit revealed to us a divine truth of what God had already done for us. According to that scripture, _God had already *BLESSED* us with *EVERY SPIRITUAL BLESSING* in the heavenly places *IN CHRIST*_. I found out in the scripture that there’s no place either in the four synoptic gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) or in the epistles where it is said that God will bless us, in most places, the word bless wherever it relates to God’s Blessing appeared in the past tense.
When Jesus was teaching at the mount, He didn’t say God will bless the meek, or God will bless the peacemakers, or those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, etc, what He said is, _BLESSED_ are the poor in the spirit; _BLESSED_ are the peacemakers; _BLESSED_ are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness, etc. Jesus used the word in the past tense, meaning if you are a peacemaker you are blessed already; if you hunger and thirst after righteousness, you are already blessed; if you are meek, you are already blessed. The blessings are not going to come after you become one of these or have one of these virtues, you have been blessed already, and it’s because you’ve already been blessed that you are now a peacemaker, meek, hunger and thirst after righteousness. The only place Jesus used the word ‘bless’ in the present tense is where He said _*”… bless them that curse you…”* (Matthew 5:44)_. The understanding of the choice of word by Jesus in this place came to me after I understood Ephesians 1:3.
We need to understand that, in the New Testament, God is not going to bless us, He had already blessed us, the only reason why we do not know that He had blessed us is either because to our ignorance of the new testament truth, or because of our definition of blessing. Some of us think God’s blessings are the material possessions we have: money, cars, houses, business empire; but a thousand times, No! These are not the blessings, and they can never be the blessings – you can’t substitute them for the real blessing; they are the effects of the blessings, the byproducts of the blessings, the additions to the blessings. When you understand the blessing, you will know how easy God had designed our lives to be. What’s the blessing? Let’s see it.
Apostle Peter was preaching to the Jews and said these words: _*”To you first, God, having raised up His Servant Jesus, sent Him to BLESS you, in turning away every one of you from your iniquities.”* Acts 3:26 NKJV_
God sent Jesus to the Jews first, to do what? To bless them. How? By turning everyone of them away from his iniquities. Note the word ‘first’; that word was used to make it clear that the turning away from sin is not only for the Jews, Jesus achieved that for the Gentiles also: He turned the Gentiles away from their iniquities the same way He turned the Jews away from their iniquities, but the Jews were considered first before others. Paul said, _*”For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.* Romans 1:16 NKJV_
The word first is letting us know that the Jews were the first beneficiaries of what Jesus came to do and accomplished for mankind.
Peter said Jesus was sent by God to bless us, for Him to come and bless us means He possessed the blessing, because only a person with the blessing can bless – God told Abraham, _*”I will make you a blessing…”*_ Jesus came to bless us, how? By turning away everyone of us from His sins? How? By sacrificing Himself for the sins of the whole world. That means, Jesus Himself is the blessing, the very blessing of God to us because He gave Himself for us. Outside Christ, there’s no other blessing that God has to give to anyone. John 3:16 says, _*”For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”*_ All of God’s blessings are in Christ, and everyone who receives Christ receives the blessing, because by coming into Christ, you have come into the blessing, that’s what makes us the blessed.
Let me help you understand Ephesians 1:3 better now, _*”blessed be God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ who in Christ has blessed us with all spiritual blessing in heavenly places.”*_ As a new creature, you either see this and accept this truth or you live a limited in life even though you are in Christ. We live in wealth but we don’t know. We live in the land filled with riches and fatness but do not know.
Since the scripture makes it clear that God had blessed us will all spiritual blessing, it is therefore wrong for us to ask God to bless us. Saying, ‘God bless me’ is wrong; also, telling a true child of God saying, ‘may the Lord bless you’ is wrong. Instead of saying, ‘God bless me’ the correct thing to say is, _”I’m blessed,”_ and continue to declare the things I’m blessed with like saying, _”I’m blessed with the peace of God;” I’m blessed with superabundant riches and wealth;” I’m blessed with success, prosperity, health, cars, houses, good spouse, good friends, good workers, sponsors,”_ etc. You talk like this because you have come to the realization that you’ve been blessed with all these. And when praying for or blessing people, instead of saying ‘may God bless you,’ you say, _”you are blessed with…(mention what you want to see manifest in the life of the person)”_. But in truth, material things are not the blessing, it’s the blessing brings them, so as you declare I’m blessed, you activate them in your life, and position yourself to receive the material possessions.
Why am I sharing this, why didn’t I keep the revelation to myself? I’m sharing this because I want all of God’s children to walk in the superabundant blessing that the Father has for us His children. I’ve heard some of our fathers in the faith like Pastor Chris Oyakhilome and Bishop David Oyedepo say I have never prayed for a car, yet I have them; they don’t pray for material things yet they have them in superabundant, while many of us are trying to experience these things that have become their reality but are still far from getting there. What these men of God have discovered is that all that’s important is Christ, He is the blessing of God to us, and as long they continue to pursue Christ and all that brings glory to Him and advance His cause which is seeking the kingdom first, all these things that others are dying to get would fall cheaply at their feet. They have known the real blessing, so they focus on Him alone, and because all things are made by Christ, the things keep chasing our fathers in the faith.
Jesus was teaching and in His teaching mentioned the things that are the basic needs, and the desire of every man (Read Matthew 6:25-34). He mentioned them so that the people would know that the Father is aware of all human needs, He told them, _*”your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things:”*_ raiments, shelter, cars, keep mentioning them, but He said to them, even with all these needs of yours and your desire to have them; _*”…seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”* Matthew 6:33_
How can one seek God’s kingdom? It’s by focusing on Christ alone, seeking the things that pertains to Him alone, giving your life to Him in totality, and living completely for Him daily. Making His dream your dream, His purpose your purpose, His desire your desire. Jesus said, _*”…seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness…”*_ When you find the kingdom of God, you would realize that the kingdom of God is all about Jesus, He is God’s righteousness revealed in human body, so when you find Christ is when you find the kingdom of God, and the righteousness of God; it is at this very moment you become God’s righteousness, and you have the kingdom of God coming to live in you and you in the kingdom. It is only at this point that all the other things that the Gentiles are dying to get would keep coming to you as additions because you have found the blessing and are living in the blessing.
Beloved, we live in the blessing of God because we live in Christ, this means we live in the blessing, lie down in the blessing, sleep in the blessing, walk in the blessing, because it’s in Christ we live, move, and have our being; the only problem is that, for a long time we don’t know this, we live in the shadow, not in the real light, so, instead of taking hold of all the riches the Father had prepared for us, we keep asking Him to bless us, give us this and give us that. So, the people who continue to ask God for these things hardly have them, it is only those who don’t bother about them, who instead focus on pursuing the interest of Christ and continue to have them in superabundance.
David lived in the Old Testament, but because of how he understood God walked with God came to the understanding which made him write Psalm 23. We recite this psalm religiously without letting the truth enter us to get a hold of us, and for this reason have not enjoyed the blessing of this truth. David didn’t live with the consciousness of needs, rather he lived with the consciousness of supplies because the Lord is his shepherd. Having the Lord as his shepherd means he has all his needs met automatically. David said:
_*The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me All the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the Lord Forever.* Psalms 23:1-6_
Apostle Paul was praying for the Saints at Philippi after they had sent their financial seed to him; in his prayers he didn’t say may the Lord bless you for reaching out to me with your substance, instead he said, _*”And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.”* Philippians 4:19 NKJV_
Why would God supply all the needs of the Saints? It’s because they’ve been paid for. The one who paid for all the needs is Christ and they are already in Christ, meaning they are living in the one who has the receipt for the payment of all their needs, so Paul said, _”and my God shall supply all your needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.”_ The Saints have been blessed to have Christ, and they live in Him, the one in whom are all the riches of God.
Living in Him makes them qualify for the supplies, and by blessing Paul with their substance, Paul brought them into the realm of abundant supplies for all their needs.
Stop asking God to bless you, He has blessed you already, just walk in the blessing by working in Christ daily.
