Scripture :Esther 1: 12. But the queen Vashti refused to come at the king’s commandment by his chamberlains: therefore was the king very wroth, and his anger burned in him.

Beloved, I welcome you to another Moment of Daily Encounter!

We established yesterday that offence is the number one factor that could stop you from walking in love! We left with a question that says, “what are the factors that cause offence?” Today we shall attempt to answer that question.

What are the factors that breed offence?

Generally speaking offence always comes from mankind! This is why Jesus said woe to that man that permits offence to come through him:

Matthew 18: 7. Woe unto the world because of offences! for it must needs be that offences come; but woe to that man by whom the offence cometh!

However, it is our response to offence that determines the gravity of each offence in our hearts.

How we respond to offence is enhanced by certain factors which are the underlying cause of offence! The following factors are considered as causes of offence:

1. Unfulfilled expectations. if I’m not expecting anything from you, what you do or say would rarely get me offended! But when I’m expecting you to do or say something one way or the other and you do otherwise, definitely offence will arise.

A wife has expectations from her husband and vice versa, a child has expectations from parents and when those children are well trained, the parents also have their own expectations from the children. The Boss has expectations from subordinate, employer from employee, pastor from church members and vice versa etc. At any point in time when these expectations are not met, there’s bound to be offence.

What then builds such expectations?

A. The environment where we are raised inputs in us certain expectations that may be wrong and funny.
B. The school and the books we are exposed to also play a role in inputting positive or negative expectations.
C. The kind of church attended also has a way of shaping one’s mind on expectations about life.
D. The family one was raised in or some of those who were raised in dysfunctional homes, they have negative attitude to life and as such, negative expectations.
E. The media especially TV programs including recently, social media, has a way of inputting into us certain expectations about life.

Biblical examples of men who got offended because their expectations were not met.

I. King Ahasuerus (Esther 1:11-22, 2:1): The king was offended at his lover Vashti because he expected his queen to obey him when he commanded her to come and parade her beauty. His offence came because he felt belittle by his lover Vashti.

II. Potiphar(Gen.39:17-20): He was offended at Joseph because the report he received from his wife (though it was a make up story), was not what he expected from such a trusted servant.

III. Haman (Esther 3:5): He was offended at Mordecai because he expected him to bow and worship him like every other gateman but felt insulted by Modeccai refusal.

IV. Pharisees (Luke4:22-28,Mrk3:1-6): They were offended at Jesus because they knew him to be a carpenter’s son, who had never attained to their level of education yet He was challenging them, the doctors of the law! On another occasion, they were offended because Jesus healed on a Sabbath day, a day they held sacred.

Beloved, check yourself, the reason for the offences you are counting right now could just be because your expectations are not met. You expect him to call you every day but he chose not. Oh you were sick and you expected pastors and church members to check on you, yet nobody seemed to be interested in you.

You expect your husband to hug you and tell you I love you yet non of such is happening and offence is mounting up in your heart. The list is just endless! Deal with offence today by expecting less from people at anytime. It is time to say no to offences.

Remember this : Heaven is real and hell is real! Offence is one thing that can spoil your journey to eternity! Jesus loves you.
