MY PRAYER FOR YOU IS THAT YOU WILL HAVE AN APPOINTMENT WITH GOD

NO ONE KEEPS AN APPOINTMENT WITH GOD AND REMAINS THE SAME

– Pastor E.A. Adeboye at RCCG Special Sunday Service || GOING HIGHER PART 50

No one ever returns from an appointment with God unchanged. Anyone who ever has an appointment with God will return with a testimony. Moses had an appointment with God and when Moses was leaving that place, the rod of a shepherd became the rod of God and with that rod He led a whole nation out of captivity. In Mark 5:2-20, there was this mad man of Gadarenes who didn’t know anything about Jesus.

He didn’t know anything about Jesus but the moment he saw him, something even in his madness told him this was my day of appointment. It was God who planned that day of appointment. By the end of the appointment, a mad man had become an evangelist. In 1 Samuel 16:11-13, David was just a shepherd in the bush and God planned an appointment and sent a Prophet and they sent for David in the bush.

One appointment with God and the shepherd boy became a king. Abraham and Isaac kept that appointment and by the time they were returning, they were returning with an irreversible blessing. Nobody keeps an appointment with God and remains the same. Psalm 16:11.

When you keep an appointment with God, your joy will become full. Psalm 122:1. Is your joy anywhere less than full? Come and keep an appointment with God. God can make an appointment with you and you too can make an appointment with God. Either way, it is to your advantage.

I remind you of the story of one woman who was sick and it got so bad the doctors called the children and said “there is nothing anyone can do, you can take her home if you want”. The woman said “fine! take me to the church”. They told her “there is no service today, the Pastor is not going to be in the Church”. She said “who told you I want to meet the Pastor. Take me to the church”. They took her to the church and she said take me to one of the pillars, she came to keep an appointment with God. As she touched the pillar she was made completely whole. I have told you the story of a man who the Prophet told him at the beginning of the year that “thus saith the Lord you are going to die this year. You can’t see the new year”.

He said is that so? Could you help me tell God to let me see December 31st? That is still part of this year. The Prophet said okay. December 31st very early in the morning, the man ran to Ebute Metta. He didn’t take a bus. If he saw any fellow coming he would dodge. He didn’t want that person to be the one that would kill him. Finally he got to the Church. As soon as he got to the Church he said the death that will come and kill me here, I will wait and see. He kept an appointment with God and he lived for several years later. No one keeps an appointment with God and remains the same.

Our Father and our God, our King, our Lord, our Saviour, our Friend, the Lover of our soul, we worship you. Please accept our worship in Jesus name. Thank you for what you have done in the past, we thank you for what you are going to do today and in the future. Please accept our thanks in Jesus name. Lord, even as we gather together to study your word, we pray that through the study of your word our faith will grow and we will be able to move mountains and you alone will be glorified. In Jesus mighty name we pray. Praise the Lord.

We are continuing our study on GOING HIGHER and now we move to part 50. Our text will be the same. 1 Kings 19:8. The reason Elijah traveled fasting for forty days and forty nights was because he was going to keep an appointment with God. We will be talking about KEEPING AN APPOINTMENT WITH GOD.

Appointments with God can be in three broad categories –

  1. God pays you a visit.
It is my prayer today that the Almighty God will pay everyone listening to me a visit.

We take examples of people from scripture who had appointments with God and it was God who came to visit.

  • Moses.
The story of that divine appointment with Moses started in Exodus 3:1- 4:20. Moses was 80 years old before that appointment took place and that means one thing that even those of you who think it is already too late for God to visit you, may God surprise you today. Moses was already a forgotten shepherd at the back side of the desert but God paid him a visit.
  • He woke up a forgotten shepherd before that day was over, he had become a national leader. All his forgotten dreams were revived and reactivated. Once he had dreamt that he would lead the children of Israel out of bondage, that’s why he fought an Egyptian who was ill-treating an Hebrew and killed him but then he became a fugitive for 40 years. Any dream that he had already vanished but God paid him a visit, God kept an appointment with him and everything revived.
  • I pray for those of you who are listening to me who have dreams that you feel will never be fulfilled, God will visit you today.

Another example is found in Judges 6:1-40. The children of Israel we’re in serious trouble. They will plant, their enemies will wait for the time of harvest then they will come and take away everything that they have been labouring for. There was this young man called Gideon and he was hiding some of the harvest from the enemy and God kept an appointment with him.

He woke up that day as a young man living in troubled times, afraid and unsure of the future, God kept an appointment with him and he ended up becoming a national leader.

Another example will be Mark 10:46-52. It was the story of Bartimaeus, he was blind, he was begging for money to eat. He was there by the road side when God paid him a visit. No matter how poor you are, you can receive a visit from God. Because of that visit, darkness changed to light in the life of Bartimaeus. Because the one who kept an appointment with him is the one that the Bible says in John 1:4-5 is the light of men that shines in darkness and darkness cannot overcome it.

  • I pray for all of you who are struggling with forces of darkness, you will get a visit from God today.
He got a visit from God and he never begged again. Poverty disappeared because the one who visited is the source of all blessings. He got a visit and he was never lonely again. Hebrews 13:5. The one who visited is the one who said I will never leave you nor forsake you. He got an appointment with God and all his enemies became his servants. As he was crying to the one who had come to pay him a visit everyone was asking him to shut up, because he was the one for whom the Lord came. If you read the story well, Jesus came to Jericho and didn’t do anything in Jericho because he came to keep an appointment with someone outside the city.
  • The one who came to keep an appointment with him was the one he was crying to, everyone asked him to shut. The same people who were asking him to shut up were the one telling him, ‘be of good cheer, the Lord is calling you’. Because of that appointment, the enemies became his footstool.
  • I am praying that you will have an appointment with God and your darkness will turn to light, poverty will disappear, you will never know loneliness again, even your enemies will become your servants.

Do you know that because of these appointments that we are talking about if you are the one God is interested in, by now you should be married and you are not. I give you another example in John 5:2-9 tells you the story of a man who had been sick for 38 years and he had a divine appointment. He was just lying there helplessly but God is the one who came to keep an appointment with him and you know all that happened, his sickness ended.

His failure ended, his defeat ended. His despair ended. Because the one who was visiting according to Colossians 1:27 says “Christ in you, the hope of glory”. When God chooses to keep an appointment with you, everything will change for the better.

  1. God gives you a designated place where He wants you to meet him.

In the place that we read about, the designated place for that meeting between God and Elijah was the Mount of Horeb. In Genesis 22:1-18, God told Abraham to take his son Isaac to a particular mountain to keep an appointment. God will designate a place where you will go to pass a test, Abraham went to that mountain and he passed the test.

Because Abraham got to that mountain and passed the test, God made sure right on that mountain that his blessing will become irreversible. God swore right on that mountain. Hebrews 6:13-14 says when God had that appointment with Abraham on that mountain, because there is no one higher than God, He swore by Himself. He made sure the blessing was irreversible. There are occasions when God will bless you and your action can cause the blessing to be reversed.

1 Samuel 3:20. As a result of the appointment that Abraham kept with God on that mountain, God said no! No! No! Your blessing will be irreversible and He went further to say I will multiply the blessing on your seed. Deuteronomy 1:11 says when you think you are great, then you don’t know how generous God can be because He can multiply you a thousand times more than you are. I am joining you in saying Amen to that because I am looking forward to a time when the Redemption Camp will become a thousand times bigger than it is and you too in your life, in your family, in your ministry, will become a thousand times more than you are.

  1. When you fix the appointment with God.
There is a saying that if Mohammed will not go to the mountain, the mountain can go to Mohammed. In 2 Kings 4:1-7, a woman was destitute, creditors were coming to sell her sons and she fixed an appointment with the man of God. She ran and said I must keep an appointment with God today. In 2 Kings 4:18-37, a woman lost her only son, a miracle son and she made up her mind to keep an appointment with God. She drove the chariot as fast as she could until she came to where the man of God was. She kept an appointment with God that she fixed herself. In 2 Kings 5:1-14, Namaan fixed an appointment with God because someone told him that ‘there is a God in Israel that can cure you of your leprosy, that can remove your reproach’.
  2. He got up and kept that appointment with God and he was made whole. In Mark 5:25-34, there was a woman who had been bleeding for 12 years and she had spent everything she had and instead of getting better, she got worse. When she heard that Jesus was around, she fixed the appointment. She didn’t consult Jesus before coming, she just decided on her own to keep that appointment with God and everything changed.

Why am I telling you this? No one ever returns from an appointment with God unchanged. Anyone who ever has an appointment with God will return with a testimony. Moses had an appointment with God and when Moses was leaving that place, the rod of a shepherd became the rod of God and with that rod He led a whole nation out of captivity.

Matthew 11:28-30.
Come and keep an appointment with me and everything will change.
