Topic: The Mystery Of The New Birth

Author: Pastor Abraham David

Now, if anyone is enfolded into Christ, he has become an entirely new person. All that is related to the old order has vanished. Behold, everything is fresh and new.2 Corinthians 5:17 TPT

In the epistle of Paul to the Saints at Rome, he called the Jews the natural branch (see Romans 11). Why were they called the natural branch? They were called the natural branch because they are the covenant people, the physical descendants of Abraham.

The natural branch were cut of because of unbelief, they rejected the Messiah, Jesus Christ, and that made way for the Gentile nations to be brought in. When Jesus was about to walk away from the Jews, He said to them, “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, which killest the prophets, and stonest them that are sent unto thee; how often would I have gathered thy children together, as a hen doth gather her brood under her wings, and ye would not! Behold, your house is left unto you desolate: and verily I say unto you, Ye shall not see me, until the time come when ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.” (Luk 13:34-35)

Because the natural branch were cut off, we were grafted in, that is those from the Gentile nations, who believe and received Christ to become the new creation. The new creation or creature therefore is the man or woman who is grafted into Christ. We had to be grafted in because we weren’t the natural branch, but Jesus made it possible for us to be grafted in and become members of God’s family through faith in His finished work of salvation. Those who were the natural branch, but cut off also need to be brought back, so, they also must believe in Jesus and be saved the same way we believed and are saved.

The new birth is an engraftment. When you engraft a plant or a tree in another tree, that tree that is grafted in another tree receives it’s nutrients and nourishment from the tree in which it is grafted into, that’s the mystery of the new birth, and why we are called the new creation, it is because, when we received Christ, our old lives were cut off and a new life was imparted into us; this new life that we received and imparted into us supplanted the human life we were having before.

As a new creation, your life doesn’t come from flesh and blood anymore even though you still live in a physical body, your life comes from God, you now have the life of the Spirit, with God as the source, and the sustainer of your new life. The Bible translation we read from today says, “Now, if anyone is enfolded into Christ, he has become an entirely new person. All that is related to the old order has vanished. Behold, everything is fresh and new.”

Confession
My loving Father, your life is in me, I am fully alive in Christ. You brought me into your family, and now I live for you, I live for your glory, to honour you with my life daily. Henceforth Lord, I would live the higher life, so that I can help others find this new life in Christ Jesus, in Jesus name. Amen.
