Teaching Series: UNDERSTANDING THE POWER OF THANKSGIVING.

(Wednesday 29th December): Understanding the Power of Thanksgiving – Part 2

  • We owe God thanks for every good thing He has done for us – Eph. 5:20/ Jam. 1:17

Eph 5:20  Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;

Jas 1:17  Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

  • Because God is the hand behind all good happenings in our lives – Jhn 15:5/                               Psa. 118:23

Joh 15:5  I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

Psa 118:23  This is the LORD’S doing; it is marvellous in our eyes.

  • A heart-seated gratitude is our covenant access to real joy – Mal. 2:2-3/ Luk. 10:21

Mal 2:2-3  If ye will not hear, and if ye will not lay it to heart, to give glory unto my name, saith the LORD of hosts, I will even send a curse upon you, and I will curse your blessings: yea, I have cursed them already, because ye do not lay it to heart. 3  Behold, I will corrupt your seed, and spread dung upon your faces, even the dung of your solemn feasts; and one shall take you away with it.

Luk 10:21  In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit, and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that

thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes: even so, Father; for so it

seemed good in thy sight.

  • Gratitude from the heart is what counts the most with God – Isa. 29:13/ 1 Sam. 16:7

Isa 29:13  Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men:

1Sa 16:7  But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I

have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the

LORD looketh on the heart.

  • God is the source of every increase we enjoy – 1 Cor. 4:7/ 2 Cor. 4:7

1Cor. 4:7  For who maketh thee to differ from another? and what hast thou that thou didst not receive? now if thou didst receive it, why dost thou glory, as if thou hadst not received it?

2Cor. 4:7  But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.

But what are we thanking God for?

  • For His wondrous works in our lives as we continue to count our blessings                                    – Psa. 78:40-72/ Psa. 103:1-3

Psa 103:1  A Psalm of David. Bless the LORD, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name. 2  Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: 3  Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases;

  • For His good hand upon our lives all through the year Luk. 17:12-19

Luk 17:12  And as he entered into a certain village, there met him ten men that were lepers, which stood afar off: 13  And they lifted up their voices, and said, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us. 14  And when he saw them, he said unto them, Go shew yourselves unto the priests. And it came to pass, that, as they went, they were cleansed. 15  And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God, 16  And fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan.17  And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine? 18  There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger. 19  And he said unto him, Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole.

  • For rendering our enemies helpless – Psa. 138:1/7/ 2Chr. 20:20-24

Psa 138:1 I will praise thee with my whole heart: before the gods will I sing praise unto thee. 7  Though I walk in the midst of trouble, thou wilt revive me: thou shalt stretch forth thine hand against the wrath of mine enemies, and thy right hand shall save me.

2Ch 20:20  And they rose early in the morning, and went forth into the wilderness of Tekoa: and as they went forth, Jehoshaphat stood and said, Hear me, O Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem; Believe in the LORD your God, so shall ye be established; believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper. 21  And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed singers unto the LORD, and that should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army, and to say, Praise the LORD; for his mercy endureth for ever. 22  And when they began to sing and to praise, the LORD set ambushments against the children of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir, which were come against Judah; and they were smitten.

  • In anticipation of perfection of all that concerns us – Psa. 138:8

Psa 138:8  The LORD will perfect that which concerneth me: thy mercy, O LORD, endureth for ever: forsake not the works of thine own hands.

  • To keep the anointing for conquest fresh on our lives – Psa. 89:20-22

Psa 89:20  I have found David my servant; with my holy oil have I anointed him: 21  With whom my hand shall be established: mine arm also shall strengthen him. 22  The enemy shall not exact upon him; nor the son of wickedness afflict him.

Jesus is Lord!
